Norms as Mental Objects - From Normative Beliefs to Normative Goals

چکیده
The study of norms (Ns) is recent but growing concern in the AI field (cf. [MOS92]; [SHO92]) as well within other formal approaches to social action, such as Game Theory (where theories of Ns began to appear long before, cf.[LEW69]; [ULL77]). The normative is an essential dimension of social life. An explicit model of such dimension is crucial for any theory of social action. Notions such as "social commitment" (cf. [GAS91]; [COH90]; etc.) "joint intentions", "teamwork" [COH91], "negotiation" [DAV83], "social roles" [WER89] etc. will not escape a purely metaphorical use if their normative character is not accounted for. Indeed, one’s committing oneself before someone else causes the latter to be entitled, on the very basis of commitment, to expect, control, and exact the action one has committed oneself to. Social commitment is a customary, if not the most frequent, source of entitlements in everyday interaction: first of all, a promise creates an entitled expectation in the addressee, namely a belief that the promised course of action will be realized. As a consequence, the addressee feels entitled to exact the action expected, that is, to control its occurrence and react if it is not performed. In particular, the addressee is entitled to express a public protest and receive the consent and support of the community of witnesses before whom the action of commitment took place. Furthermore, there is no true negotiation without control for cheaters and norm of reciprocation (of. [GOU60]). When social agents negotiate an exchange of resources, they actually

Regulative and Constitutive Norms in Normative Multiagent Systems
In this paper we introduce a formal framework for the construction of normative multiagent systems, based on Searle’s notion of the construction of social reality. Within the structure of normative multiagent systems we distinguish between regulative norms that describe obligations, prohibitions and permissions, and constitutive norms that regulate the creation of institutional facts as well as...
متن کاملAttributing Mental Attitudes to the Normative Systems
The role of norms in the formalization of multiagent systems is to stabilize the behavior of a multiagent system, and thus they play the same role for such systems as intentions do for single agent systems. However, it is still an open problem whether they should be represented explicitly, for example in a deontic logic, or they can also be represented implicitly. Boella and Lesmo [1] propose a...
متن کاملAn Agent Oriented Ontology of Social Reality
In this paper we introduce an ontology based on the notion of agent to represent and reason about social reality. We model social constructions as agents, for example, groups, organizations, normative systems, and roles, and we attribute mental attitudes to them. Roughly, we define obligations or regulative norms as goals of the normative system, constitutive norms as beliefs of the normative s...
متن کاملConstitutive Norms in the Design of Normative Multiagent Systems
In this paper, we consider the design of normative multiagent systems composed of both constitutive and regulative norms. We analyze the properties of constitutive norms, in particular their lack of reflexivity, and the trade-off between constitutive and regulative norms in the design of normative systems. As methodology we use the metaphor of describing social entities as agents and of attribu...
متن کاملAttributing Mental Attitudes to Social Entities: Constitutive Rules are Beliefs, Regulative Rules are Goals
In this paper, we propose a model of constitutive and regulative norms in a logical multiagent framework. We analyze the relationship between these two types of rules and explain similarities between them, using the metaphor of considering social entities like normative systems, groups and organizations as agents and of attributing them mental attitudes as well as an autonomous behavior. We arg...
